The problem of the oscillations and stability of compressible Maclaurin spheroids is reconsidered on the basis of the third-order virial equations in an arbitrarily rotating frame of reference. In contrast with the work of Kochhar and Trehan (1974), it is found that the frequencies evaluated in a rotating frame and those evaluated in an inertial frame are related to one another in a very simple way. Numerical calculations made for a wide range of the adiabatic exponent further clarify the effect of compressibility on the natural frequencies
