Berkeley survey data is used to study the latitude distribution of the maximum intensities of the 21-cm line at terminal velocities in the local spiral arm. It is found that only cool and dense gas can be associated with spiral features such as shingles and the corrugation effect of the galactic layer. There is no indication of such a systematic effect in the intercloud medium.
