Venus, History Of Astronomy

Scientific paper

The first book on telescopic observations of the planet Venus was published in 1728 by the Italian scholar Francesco Bianchini ("New phenomena of Hesperus and Phosphorus, or rather observations concerning the planet Venus"). With the aid of unwieldy single-lens, long-focus refracting telescopes he tried to determine the rotation period of the planet from the motion of dark patches on the disc, and to draw a map of its surface. Even though both his assumptions and results were uncorrect, his observations held a remarkable place in the history of early telescopic surveys of Venus. By the use of a number of both published and unpublished sources, this paper analyses the making of Bianchini's work in the historical and cultural context of its age, his observation techniques and the influence exerted by this book on subsequent studies of the planet Venus.
