The hydrogen absorption-line profile in the microwave background spectrum is computed which is due to departure from LTE during adiabatic expansion of the universe in the epoch corresponding to redshifts of 15 to 150. It is found that the line depth and the point of minimum emission depend substantially on the mean mass density of the universe and on the redshift corresponding to the epoch of decoupling of matter and radiation. Based on this dependence, a method is proposed for determining both the mean mass density of the universe and the redshift of the decoupling epoch.
