The interdisciplinary approach employed in the study of interstellar molecules is considered. The known interstellar molecules, as of January 1977, are presented in a table. It is pointed out that, except for a few diatomic molecules, all of the 40-odd known interstellar molecules have been detected only by means of their radio spectra. Among the many astrophysical problems that can be investigated with interstellar molecules is the galactic history of the elements. Attention is given to the chemical history of the Galaxy, the birth and death of stars, and questions concerning the galactic and extragalactic structure.
