Scientific paper

Development of a high-frequency plasma wave structure originating during formation of the plasma and persisting into the afterglow phase is discussed. The investigation of forbidden transitions observed in the spectra of laboratory and astrophysical plasmas is reviewed; an optical probe analysis of satellite transitions in terms of parameters relevant to the plasma is reported. The experimental analysis is based on the helium satellite technique.
