Statistical data on cometary orbits are analyzed in order to investigate the hypothesis that the comets were captured by Jupiter according to the Laplace scheme of capture. Consideration of selection effects and analysis of rapidity of change of the osculating elements of the orbits of long-period comets can explain why most of the nodes of observed comets are within the earth's orbital zone, reaching 2 AU from the sun. Probabilities of capture of comets and the parameters of their parabolic orbits as a function of their place of capture, initial velocity, and inclination of initial orbit were computed. Statistical regularities in the distribution of the elements of comet orbits can be brought into accord with the Laplace hypothesis, and are not in conflict with the idea of the existence of a cometary cloud around the solar system.
