It is shown that the gravitational field induced by the quadrupole moment of Saturn stabilizes the particles in the rings in the equatorial plane of the planet. The thickness of a ring is determined by the depth of the quadrupole potential well and the characteristic transverse velocity of the particles. Self-gravitation plays a significant role in the case of large particles.
