Results are presented for observations of the polarization of the He I D3 line at 5876 A in 82 quiescent prominences over the period from 1973 to 1976. It is found that the magnetic-field intensity in quiescent prominences ranges from 0 to 10 G, that the average intensity of the longitudinal field component is about 4.5 G, and that there is a general positive vertical gradient in prominence field intensity. Local variations in field intensity are examined, and possible fine structure in the prominence field is investigated on the basis of the Hanle effect. A small variation in average prominence field intensity with solar cycle is confirmed. The stability of magnetic-field intensity during the lifetime of a prominence is also discussed.
