Solar energetic particle (SEP) events reveal a fundamental process of energy conversion in space plasmas that we can study with an unprecedented wealth of information, due to the possibility to combine in situ and remote sensing diagnostics. Despite decades of operation, neutron monitors are still the up to date instrument for the measurement of cosmic rays in the energy range between 500 MeV and several tens of GeV. As such they are a valuable complement of the space borne measurements of particles at lower energies and of nuclear gamma-rays from solar flares. Yet, the availability and standardisation of the neutron monitor data has to be improved. This is the objective of the NMDB project, funded by the European Community. It is underway to pool new and historical data of European and some non-European neutron monitors, and make them easily available and usable to astrophysicists, e.g. as the high-energy complement of new projects such as Solar Orbiter or Solar Probe, and a wide user community interested by space-weather applications. The contribution presents the status and future developments of the project, and illustrates some applications.
