The interaction of emission from a cosmological gamma-ray burst with the interstellar medium surrounding the parent galaxy is investigated. It is shown that, irrespective of the particular model used to account for the formation of cosmological gamma-ray bursts, the brightest bursts should have counterparts at visual and ultraviolet wavelengths. The light curves of such counterparts are calculated for bursts with energies of 10 exp 51 and 10 exp 52 erg in interstellar media with different densities.
