Past studies have tackled the problem of the local interaction of Io’s corona with the plasma in the torus using different complementary approaches, each involving some simplifications. The MHD models employ parameterization of the source of ionization, a conducting inner boundary but limited chemistry (Linker et al., 1998; Combi et al., 1998). Others have taken a 2-fluid approach assuming a constant magnetic field (Saur et al., 1999) or made a full hybrid simulation (Lipatov and Combi, 2006). Dols et al., 2008 focused on the physical chemistry in Io’s corona. They couple a model of the plasma flow around Io plus a multi-species chemistry model and compare the model results to the Galileo observation in Io’s wake. We extend Dols et al., 2008 study by simulating conditions along several other Galileo flybys (when Io experienced different upstream plasma characteristics) and compare the results with in situ observations.
