The history of the development of ideas about the helisophere is
considered briefly in connection with the study of the modulation
effects of Galactic cosmic rays. The contributions of Compton (1934),
Simpson (1963), Forbush (1954), Dorman (1975), and Parker (1965) are
outlined.
