There are currently three hypotheses for the origin of the Martian global dichotomy: (1) creation by endogenic processes, (2) creation by a simple megaimpact, and (3) creation by overlapping large impacts; these must meet the criteria of accounting for observed plan shape of the Martian northern lowland, physical consistency, and compatibility with geological and geophysical data. While it is presently supposed that aspects of the multiple-impact hypothesis are needed to account for some topographic details, an early megaimpact, endogenic processes, or some combination of these appear better able to account for the dichotomy as a whole.
