It is shown that, for a wide range of initial energies of auroral electrons, the form of the vertical emission intensity profile of the bands of the first negative system of N2(+) coincides quite well with the form of the profile of the total energy release. The errors in calculations of the vertical profiles of the energy release, caused by the approximation of local energy losses by ionization-cascade electrons, does not exceed 10 percent for initial energies greater than 500 eV.
