The electron density Ne measured on the Vertikal-6 (low solar activity) and Vertikal-7 (elevated solar activity) rockets at altitudes of 180 - 1500 km is compared with the theoretical values on Ne. On the basis of this comparison it is hypothesized that the elevated, as compared with the MSIS-86 model, value of the atomic oxygen density measured in the Vertikal-6 experiment lasts for a brief time and does not affect Ne. For both experiments the best agreement betweeen the computed and measured values of Ne is achieved with the MSIS-86 model atmospheric pressure and density for the calculation of the plasma drift velocity. The IRI-86/87 empirical model gives a value of Ne that agrees fairly well with the rocket measurements of Ne.
