Observational studies of Mars during the 1988 opposition are reviewed. Consideration is given to the acquisition and interpretation of CCD images of Mars. Studies of the chemical composition of Mars are examined, including the analysis of samples from the Viking missions, spectroscopy, radar, and thermal IR mapping. In addition, studies of the Martian atmosphere and polar caps are discussed.
