Two methods for estimating the column density of molecular hydrogen in diffuse interstellar clouds are compared. The first method combines the atomic hydrogen column density with the E(B-V) diagram, and the second method is based on optical observations of CH molecules. The CH method is shown to be more accurate and, for the case of diffuse clouds, to provide a smaller rms scatter than the atomic H method.
