The effects of magnetic cushioning on unsteady shock phenomena are calculated, including thermal instability, secondary shocks, and the catastrophic cooling instability. It is found that, as the magnetic field increases during the collapse of the layer, the criteria for the growth of density and temperature perturbations diverge. In addition, the consequences of magnetic cushioning for shocks associated with stellar winds, Herbig-Haro objects, and supernova remnants are discussed. The results suggest that shock velocities greater than 200 km/s are needed for instabilities to lead to secondary shocks in a cooling layer.
