A new estimate of solar irradiance in the wavelength range 2000-3100 Angstroms at 1-A resolution has been developed from stratospheric balloon measurements. This 'top of the atmosphere' extrapolated spectrum derives from measurements made by two separately calibrated detector assemblies mounted within the same spectrometer optical train, one at 0.12-A resolution between 2000 and 2370 A, the other at 1.0-A resolution between 2000 and 3100 A. The resulting composite spectrum exhibits excellent spectral repeatability, with an instrumental wavelength accuracy of better than 0.25 A and relative precision of better than 3 percent. The final radiometric error estimate is 10-12 percent, based on both the absolute calibration and the extrapolation procedures. Comparisons with other recent measurements of the solar irradiance are generally within these error bars.
