Phase C/D of ISO has recently been initiated by ESA, following the successful completion of Phase B at the end of 1987. The current status of the ISO satellite design is reviewed, along with its major performances predictions. Mission critical performances and driving requirements are emphasized. An outline of the ISO development philosophy and the current status of the programme is also included in this paper.
