Values of the Eddington ratio evaluated for nearby and for distant active galactic nuclei suggest that many massive remnants of the activity ought to hide in the nuclei of currently inactive galaxies. Recent observations of a central mass concentration in a number of normal galaxies are found to be consistent with the distribution of relic nuclear masses expected in nuclei with short-lived, and likely recurrent, activity.
