High resolution spectroscopy and spectrovelocimetry observations of the brightest RV Tauri star R Sct are reported. Spectroscopic observations, mainly around H-alpha are distributed on three pulsation cycles respectively, in 1985, 1986, and 1987. Spectrovelocimetric observations with CORAVEL concern only one cycle in 1987. These observations show that there are two shock waves produced during each pulsating period (142 days). The main shock is certainly the consequence of helium recombination during atmospheric expansion. It occurs just before the deep luminosity minimum. The secondary shock is produced during the shallow luminosity minimum and would be the result of the resonance between the fundamental mode and its first overtone, as suggested by nonlinear hydrodynamical models (Fadayev and Kokin, 1985). Nevertheless, this idea is not supported by period doubling bifurcation and chaotic nonlinear pulsation models. Evidence exists of strong infall motion (Ti I and Ca I inverse P-Cygni emissions) during the primary light maximum.
