A stable finite difference method incorporating a decomposition operator is formulated for the numerical solution of a nonsteady multiconstituent boundary value diffusion problem, where chemical reactions are involved. Numerical results are given for an aeronomic model of the Martian atmosphere incorporating eddy diffusion. Since theoretical estimates show the observed stability of the Martian atmosphere to CO2, photodissociation can be explained in terms of a relatively simple sequence of chemical reactions without using the hypothesis of an anomalously high rate of turbulent mixing.
