The paper gives a summary description of the main hypotheses underlying current cosmological theories. These include: at a given moment, every observer, whatever his position, must make the same observation; the observable part of the universe is representative of its totality; every observer observes the same thing independently of his position and time; the laws of physics as we know them in the laboratory hold for all time and place; the laws of physics are qualitatively correct at all times, but the values of certain constants may vary slowly; Mach's principle; light rays follow geodesics of zero length; space-time can be described in orthogonal coordinates; space-time has spherical symmetry with respect to an observer; polytropic expression relation pressure and density holds; and a value to the cosmological constant must be assigned. Models that can be deduced from the various hypotheses are briefly discussed.
