The accretion of interstellar matter onto the sun is examined. It is shown that if the Hoyle-Lyttleton mass accretion rate applies, this accretion is sufficient to enhance the surface heavy element abundances in the sun and other solar-type stars. This may be sufficient to permit the construction of solar models which can significantly reduce the discrepancy between observed abundances and theoretical predictions. The predicted solar neutrino flux is lowered if this type of enhancement occurs. This effect would become more pronounced if, as suggested by Joss (1974), a similar enhancement results from accretion of planetesimals remaining after the formation of the Solar System
