Two systems proposed for indexing objects on the lunar surface are compared. The earlier five-index Arthur (1971) system and the Fryer (1973) system are outlined, and ways of incorporating the former into the latter are indicated. Advantages and drawbacks of the Nikonov (1972) are discussed. An expanded Nikonov system retaining all the advantages of that system in terms of cell numeration, while reducing the size of the cells, is outlined. Errors inherent in this expanded system, particularly in the polar areas, are indicated.
