The process of plasma accretion onto a neutron star with a strong magnetic field is analyzed. It is proposed that a considerable portion of the gravitational energy of the accreting gas may be released in an accretion column located at a distance of several stellar radii from the neutron star's surface. It is found that this model agrees with observations of the X-ray pulsar Her X-1 and predicts an additional source of soft gamma-rays in the 150-keV energy range for that object.
