The excitation and ionization of He I and He II is investigated for the
case of a realistic solar model. The calculations are based on a
simplified numerical treatment of the He I and He II continua and the He
II 304-A line. The extent to which various proposed mechanisms can
account for the observed line and continuum intensities is discussed.
