In the hydromagnetic interactions of magnetic merging, the electrical resistivity determines the time scale for the temporal approach toward a steady state and the length scale for the dynamical balance in a steady state. These intrinsic scales are different from those externally identifiable scales. In a steady state, conversion of magnetic energy into kinetic and thermal energies requires the upstream Alfven number to be less than unity. Solutions in the vicinity of a neutral point show that the use of Ohm's law with a simple resistivity is appropriate in the modeling of field-line reconnection.
