The quantum theory of electron screening is generalized to the case of a relativistic astrophysical plasma. An expression for the longitudinal permittivity of a relativistic quantum electron gas is derived using a quantum kinetic equation involving self-similar interaction for the density matrix. A correction to the Coulomb interaction energy of two reacting nuclei is calculated as the perturbation energy in the surrounding, initially homogeneous electron plasma, and it is found that this correction depends only on the charges of the colliding nuclei and the longitudinal permittivity of the electron gas. An equation for the screening correction factor is obtained as a function of the medium's density, temperature, and chemical composition. It is concluded that the screening effect in an astrophysical plasma should be completely caused by perturbations in the electron gas and that ions should play an appreciable role only at very high temperatures or when the nuclear gas becomes degenerate.
