Theoretical and observational data are used to suggest that radial-orbit instability is a reason for the existence of elliptical galaxies. Besides its primary function of producing shape, this instability may play a decisive role in establishing the final equilibrium state of the star distribution function. The universal nature of radial-orbit instability is associated primarily with the fact that highly elongated (almost radial) orbits naturally dominate in various kinds of collisionless collapses. The latter are obligatory, in turn, in modern cosmogonical scenarios. The role of fire hose instability in explaining the existence of a maximum oblateness in elliptical galaxies is also discussed briefly.
