The quickest descent method is proposed to analyse Hα line profiles of a loop prominence. By fitting observational lines, the physical parameters such as Doppler width, optical thickness at line centre and line displacement can be directly obtained. By this method, some symmetrical and asymmetrical line profiles of the loop prominence of Feb. 18, 1984 are fitted. It is found that the method is characterized by rapid convergence, high precision and no scatter.
