S Andromedae = Supernova (SN) 1885A remains a somewhat enigmatic object. On balance the evidence appears to favor the view that it was a peculiar supernova of Type Ia (SN Ia). If this view is correct, then SN 1885A and SN 1937C are the only two SNe Ia that have Cepheid-based distances and luminosities. From contemporary observations MV(max) = -18.7 for S And and MV(max) = -19.8 for SN 1937C. The B-V color of S And at approximately 15 days past maximum appears to have been redder than that of the normal SN Ia 1980N but not as red as that of the subluminous object SN 1991bg at the same phase.
