The capability of the current generation of hard-X-ray detectors to solve the unsolved problems of high-energy astrophysics is discussed with particular reference to the PDS experiment on board the Italian SAX satellite. The problem of the limiting sensitivity of these detectors is examined, with consideration given to the negative impact of the systematic errors in the background subtraction. The need for new experimental techniques is emphasized, since systematic errors can significantly reduce the reliability of the measurements of current detetors. The discussion also covers the possibilities afforded by the use of concentrating devices and the problem of X-ray polarimetry at high energies.
