The historical background and the scientific objectives of the ESA-NASA Ulysses mission are briefly reviewed. The Ulysses instruments are listed together with a summary of the data they will collect. In particular, attention is given to magnetic-field experiments, solar-wind experiments, particles and cosmic ray experiments, X-ray and gamma-sources experiments, cosmic dust experiments, plasma waves and radio waves experiments, and radio research using the Ulysses telecommunications system and the NASA Deep-Space Network. Consideration is also given to the study of the dependence of mass loss and ionic composition of the solar wind on heliographic latitude.
