In this paper some deficiencies in IAU nutation theory are discussed. It
points out that descriptions for CEP and free motions in IAU nutation
theory should be modified. VLBI observations of nutations are compared
with IAU 1980 nutation series. Their deviations can provide a basis for
improving IAU nutation theory.
