A sample of 84 starlike quasars are studied with optical linear polarization measurements to devise a simple spectrum model and comment on the existence of a beamed optical continuum in the radio structure. A strong correlation between percentage polarization and dominance of the compact radio core is noted in the sample. The spectrum model consists of a steep polarized optical synchrotron component related to the radio core and a flat unpolarized 'big blue bump'. The model implies that quasars with high optical polarization are essentially the same as flat-spectrum core-dominant quasars. The model also suggests that the emission regions of the radio and optical 'beaming cones' are related. The present study is of interest in assessing the relation between the extreme nonthermal properties of BL Lac objects, blazars, and 'normal' radio sources.
