The effects of obscuration of the primary components by its accretion disk are analyzed. Models for the vertical structure are surveyed with an emphasis on the optical and geometrical thickness of disks and their dependence on parameters involved. The visibility of the white dwarf primary component in stationary accretion cataclysmic binaries and in dwarf novae at quiescence is discussed. It is concluded that the effects of obscuration need to be taken into account in all types of studies dealing with the analysis of photometric and spectroscopic data.
