Two samples of 34 and 55 galaxies are used to discuss global UV (2000 A), H-alpha, FIR, and radio continuum emissions of normal disk galaxies as potential tracers of current star formation. A model of dust extinction correction for the UV fluxes of galaxies based on their total FIR emission is presented. The mean extinction found with this model is in agreement with previous estimates using the HI surface density of the galaxies whereas individual corrections do not correlate with any gas component with the exception of a dispersed correlation with the total gas surface density. FIR and radio continuum emissions per unit area are found to correlate very well, as well as the UV and H-alpha ones. Correlations between FIR or radio continuum surface densities and UV or H-alpha ones are more dispersed, especially those involving the UV radiation. It is argued that dust extinction might be at the origin of these dispersions. The contention of previous studies that the star formation activity of disk galaxies depends on their total gas content is confirmed.
