Recent COMPTEL results indicate Al-26 1.8 MeV emission from the Vela region. A preliminary COMPTEL image shows that the extent of the emission region encompasses the positions of the Vela supernova remnant (SNR) and the Wolf-Rayet binary system WR 11. Accepted nucleosynthesis theories predict that SNe II and WR stars should be major sources of Al-26. We discuss the potential Al-26 sources in the Vela region and present estimates for their distances and nucleosynthesis yield. In particular, the distance to the Vela SNR is examined in detail, disclosing a probable value clearly below the 500 pc assumed so far. We find the Vela SNR to be the best candidate for a COMPTEL observation at 1.8 MeV. It is shown that classical novae most probably fail to provide a measurable flux from the Vela region. The analysis of the flux contribution of WR 11 shows it to be a less likely source than the Vela SNR. However, the lack of nucleosynthetic calculations for binary W-R stars implies additional uncertainties in the Al-26 yield to the errors involved in single stellar models. Therefore, WR 11 cannot be excluded as a source of 1.8 MeV radiation. Nevertheless, the Vela region offers the possibility to measure directly the nucleosynthesis yield of single Population I sources.
