FUSE has made many important contributions to our understanding of the interstellar medium, ranging from measurements of the molecular hydrogen content of local cold clouds to the distribution of hydrogen molecules, deuterium, and highly-ionized gas in the galaxy and beyond. One of the original research programs identified by the FUSE Science Team was to analyze abundances and depletions in Galactic diffuse and translucent interstellar clouds, making use of resonance lines of several important atoms and ions having transitions in the FUSE wavelength region. Prior studies will be reviewed, and new work will be summarized as part of an overview of the primary issues in understanding interstellar abundances and depletions in diffuse and translucent clouds. Comparisons of observed depletions and grain properties with extisting dust models will be discussed.
