FUSE and HST have obtained high-resolution spectra of many extragalactic targets, showing absorption associated with our Galaxy, intergalactic gas clouds, and external galaxies. We describe our study of H I and O VI absorption in sightlines with low impact parameter (<700 kpc) to nearby galaxies (velocities up to 3500 km s-1; z<0.012). This complements studies of more distant O VI absorption, but we can more easily study the galaxies near the sightline (200 kpc at 10 Mpc corresponds to ˜1 degree). In 80% of the cases Lyα or Lyβ absorption (N(H I) up to a few 1014 cm-2) is seen at a velocity within 200 km s-1 of the nearest galaxy's systemic velocity. For impact parameters <350 kpc and a detection limit of 60 mÅ, associated O VI absorption is clearly seen in 5 cases; there are 10 tentative detections (2.5--3σ or some blending present) and 7 non-detections. No O VI is found for any pair with impact parameter >350 kpc, with 18 limits <60 mÅ. We find just one case of apparent O VI without a galaxy nearby.
