A detailed study of the C III 1176Å multiplet in active cool stars has shown significant deviations of the line flux from the optically thin approximation. These deviations become more pronounced during flares. Opacity can be used as a powerful diagnostic to estimate path lengths in the transition region. Our analysis reveals that stellar transition regions have very small spatial characteristics typically in the range of 10 - 100 km. These path lengths are in agreement with the small scale structure seen in the solar transition region.
