The paper proposes a novel approach to the computer-aided study of the evolution of complex discrete systems consisting of a large number (N) of elements in contact. This approach is used to develop the method of virtual contacts, whose application leads to machine time costs of about N-squared, as contrasted with an exhaustive approach in which these costs amount to N-cubed. This method was used to perform numerical experiments concerned with the simulated formation of planetary systems in a new evolutionary model with N = 25,600; and the high efficiency of the method was shown. It is concluded that the proposed method can be used to study a broad class of collision and coagulation processes.
