Because of the present-day scientific situation, the GCVS project, which was initiated in the 1940s on behalf of the IAU, now faces the need for serious change. The most important directions of the future work are likely to be: determination of accurate coordinates for known variables; continuation of the catalog of suspected variables; and development of an improved classification of variable stars.
