Five scientific satellite proposals selected by ESA are described: Far-Infrared and Submillimetre Space Telescope (FIRST); X-ray Multi-Mirror satellite (XMM); Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO); Asteroid Gravity, Optical and Radar Analysis (AGORA); and four satellites in the earth's magnetosphere (Cluster). FIRST will permit study of physical processes taking place in quasars, in the nuclei of active galaxies, and in the disks of abnormal and normal galaxies, with a high-degree of sensitivity as well as spacial and spectral resolutions for wavelengths between 0.1 and 1.0 millimeter. XMM's purpose will be to observe active galactic nuclei, generate temperature maps of extended objects, and observe faint stars in several galaxies including the Milky Way. SOHO is to explain the corona's existence, locate the source of solar wind acceleration and determine the interior solar structure. AGORA will explore Main Belt asteroids, and Cluster is to study small variations in the earth's plasma environment and the accompanying turbulence.
