Of the 123 short-period comets discovered to date, 28 objects have failed to return when predicted, even though several perihelion passages were successfully observed before their disappearance. Most of these disappearances were caused by the comet being fainter than expected, or by the comet's geocentric positions being less favourable than at discovery. Some comets were also too faint for recovery by visual searches, while ephemeris-aided photographic searches failed, because the orbits were poorly determined and estimates of the magnitude were over optimistic. This paper surveys those comets, for which continued photographic searches may be feasible, given an adequate ephemeris.
