Observed ground-based values of DR with respect to UT are compared with calculated values of this quantity for seven typical geomagnetic disturbances caused by solar-flare plasma streams. Satisfactory agreement between observed and calculated values of DR is found. The comparison made it possible to evaluate the characteristic time (tau) of ring-current dispersal; tau = 10-15 h both for flare disturbances and M-type disturbances.
