A theoretical definition is presented of the necessary conditions under which compact aggregates of solid matter could develop from loose local clumps of dust grains in a contracting protostellar cloud. It is demonstrated that dense aggregates of solid particles form as local clumps sink in the gravitational field of a gas in a protostellar cloud. The necessary conditions for a clump to compact are described, and the possible size and mass of such clumps developing in a protoplanetary disk are estimated. Since the coagulation of the clumps depends on the parameters of the grains and the ambient gas would have differed in different parts of the protoplanetary (protostellar) cloud, there can be very wide variations in the size of the local clumps and in the composition of the constituent grains. The results suggest that a clump may undergo a nongravitational compaction process well before it reaches the central plane of the protostellar cloud.
